After a small break were back and with a review of a great gadget every reef hobbyist will love. Ophek are well known for their quality LED lighting units, but in this review we will be taking a look at something a little different. The Orphek Azurelite LED Flashlight is a handheld blue LED flashlight that fits in your pocket and has a variety of uses. Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook as we will be giving this away in our Christmas Competition in collaboration with www.ukmarinelighting.co.uk.
On uboxing the Orphek Azurelite LED Flashlight the reputation for quality is well upheld. The box itself resembles something you would expect to house and expensive piece of jewelry like a Rolex watch! The unit itself is a good weight and feels really well put together. The operation button and the mode switch based on the neck of the flashlight also feels very durable and the whole thing just feels like it’s hard wearing.
When I first saw this type of product my initial reaction was “looks cool but would I use it? Is it just a gimmick?” and this thought was compounded further when I tried out a couple of sinilar products from a different manufacturer. However the Orphek Azurelite LED Flashlight is a little different. This thing has some power, the single 5 watt LED really shines and with lights on or off on my reef tank I can really see the coral fluro. The other area of differentiation with the Orphek Azurelite LED Flashlight is that you can twist the dial on the neck to alter the Signature Convex Optic creating a spread that ranges from a direct intense beam to a wide angle glow. This is great for night time inspection, coast along with a wide angle until you spot something of interest and then just twist the dial to highlight the area fully.
What I have been using the Orphek Azurelite LED Flashlight for mainly is checking how the corals glow. I took it down to my LFS and headed over to the coral tables. By directing the beam on the individual corals I can see how well they are going to glow when it hits the magical blue hour on my light cycle and everything glows like it’s from Avatar. By using the light when purchasing corals it will also give you a good idea of coral health, if it doesn’t glow how it should it is probably best to leave it where it is.
The Orphek Azurelite LED Flashlight is a great bit of kit for your reefing tool box. It’s going to help you when choosing your corals, take photos of your corals and allow you to take a peek at what is going on when the lights are out and your corals are feeding. The flashlight is easy to use and gives you some great flexibility to change the beam intensity all wrapped up in a compact and hard wearing unit.
